Income Tax Deductions
Keep a detailed record of all moving costs, if your move is job-related. Many expenses, including house-hunting trips may be deductible.
- Family’s travel expenses, including meals and lodging
- Cost of transporting furniture, other household goods and personal belongings
- Food and hotel bills for up to 30 days in your new city if you have to wait to move into your new home
- The costs of selling your old home or settling a lease, plus the costs of buying or leasing your new home
There is a ceiling on deduction, outlined in detail in the Internal Revenue Service’s Publication 521, “Tax Information on Moving Expenses,” available free from IRS offices.
Miscellaneous
- Empty and defrost freezer; clean refrigerator, plan use of food (call food bank if necessary).
- Place baking soda to dispel odors
- Have appliances serviced for moving
- Clean rugs or clothing before moving; have them moving-wrapped
- Check with your moving company regarding insurance coverage, packing and unpacking labor,
- arrival day, various shipping papers, methods and time of expected payment
- Leave keys needed by new tenant or owner with Realtor or owner
- Plan for special care needs of infants and pets while traveling
- Carry jewelry and legal documents yourself, or use registered mail
- Let friends or relatives know route and schedule you will travel, including overnight stops
- Ask about regulations, licenses, tags, etc. for pets
- Notify your church that you are leaving the city, ask for affiliation in new city
- Pick up laundry, dry cleaning and alterations
- Drain sprinkler system
- Drain gasoline from lawn mower
- Return library books
- Have car tuned and serviced
- Pack a copy of telephone directory
At your new address
- Check on service of telephone, gas, electricity, water and garbage
- Check pilot light on stove, hot water heater, and furnace
- Have appliances checked
- Ask the Post Office for mail it may be holding for your arrival
- Have new address recorded on existing driver’s license or apply for new state driver’s license
- Visit city offices and register for voting
- Register car to get new license plates
- Obtain inspection sticker and transfer motor club membership
- Register family in your new place of worship
- Register children in school
- Arrange for medical services: Doctor, Dentist, Veterinarian, etc.
